NATURE ENEWSLETTER December 9, 2012 A STELLAR SHOW OF ASTRONOMICAL PROPORTIONS! Astronomically speaking, this week has potential to be pretty spectacular! On December 13th or 14th, the peak of the Geminid Meteor Shower is estimated to occur. Visible from Earth on clear nights, this shower is celebrated for producing several dozens of multicolored meteors per hour. According to Central Ohio Astronomical Society (members of NASA's Night & Sky Network), a little more than half will appear white, just over a quarter will be yellow, and the remainder will be blue, red, and green. With the date aligned with the New Moon (our Moon smack in the middle between the Earth and the Sun), the skies should be dark - great for skywatching and meteor shower viewing. But you'll need to be up for it - after 9 pm, dressed for lounging out in the cold - and looking toward the east. The Geminid Meteor Shower occurs reliably every year, named for its radiation point near Castor and Pollux in the Gemini constellation. Join Black River Astronomical Society (BRAS) for a close look at the Geminid Meteor Shower this Friday 12/14 (weather permitting), 7-9 pm at Carlisle Reservation's Nielson Observatory, located just down the road from the Carlisle Visitor Center. (Don't forget to stop in at 'Holiday Lights' open from 6 to 10 pm!) BRAS meets regularly the 1st Wednesday of each month at the Carlisle Visitor Center. New astronomers and visitors are welcome to attend these and regularly scheduled observation sessions held at the Nielson Observatory.
