Please join the Black River Astronomical Society, The Lorain County Metorparks and Oberlin College this afternoon/evening for a celebration of astronomical proportions...
Starting at 6pm we will have a solar viewing session. Come see the Sun as you've never seen it before. See Solar prominences, flares, sunspots, plages, etc. Oh, and listen to the Sun's very own radio waves on a radio telescope.
Then join us in celebrating the 10th birthday of the Nielsen Observatory. See the new C14 on a German Equatorial Mount donated to us by the Oberlin College Astronomy Department. Then try out the new pads the metroparks built for our star party goers.
Dan Martin and Pat McCaslin from the Lorain County Metroparks will be speaking about the Metroparks commitment to and role in promoting astronomy in Lorain County. John & Rose Nielsen's son, Sven will be on hand to say a few words about the Nielsen Telescopes and Observatory.
Karina Leppik will officially present the new C14 & Losmandy mount to the club, and finally John O'Neal will say a few words on behalf of our membership.
Other fun events include a children's tent with coloring pages, and crafts and talks by our own Dave Lengyel. Tim Fairweather has prepared a Planet Walk and we will be conducting groups on a Planet Tour which will take us on a nice liesurely stroll down by the river.
We'll have plenty of free gifts and the metroparks is providing cookies and punch. So, please come on out and join us. The Solar viewing will start at 6pm, the ceremony at 7pm and the star party will begin promptly after the ceremony, or as soon as the first stellar object appears in the sky.
Highlights of the Star Party will include the planets Venus, Mars, Saturn, Jupiter and Neptune. The full Moon will also be rising shortly after dark. See close-ups of craters like you've never seen them before.
If you plan on staying for the star party, please bring a light jacket as it can get a little chilly at night, this time of year. You may also want to bring some bug spray.
