We are OPENING the Nielsen Observatory to the public tonight, Friday June 15th, 2018 from 10:00PM to 12:00 Midnight. Come use our powerful telescopes to see Jupiter with it's moons, and later in the evening golden Saturn with it's rings. The highlight this summer will be Mars which will be closer to Earth that it has been for the last 13 years, and thus will appear larger than usual. As Mars is the only planet on which we can see actual surface features, this will be an exciting time to view, especially near the end of July when Mars is closest. There is currently a dust storm blanketing one side of Mars, but it is already both larger than usual and brighter than usual, and some surface features were visible Wednesday night. Please go back to the home page and click on the "Maps" tab for directions to the observatory, and on the drive in, please watch for deer. We ask that you park in the parking lot on the right and walk over to the observatory, as parking beside the building is restricted to members unloading telescopes and equipment. The purpose of this forum is to provide a place for members of The Black River Astronomical Society to blog, discuss upcoming meetings, cancel meeting, advertise their intent to go to the Nielson, etc. The Black River Astronomical Society has been bringing astronomy to, and serving Lorain County residents continuously since 1949.
